The Adani Vizhinjam Port (near Trivandrum) has already crossed 500,000 TEU (twenty foot equivalent units - containers) against a target of 60,000 TEU in this FY. The First Phase of the Project (1 million TEU) is expected to be completed by Dec 24. Seeing the scale of transhipment activity in the just inaugurated port, the GoI, Govt of Kerala and Adanj Ports have planned to complete all four phases by 2028-29 *17 years ahead of schedule*. When fully completed the port will be able to handle 7 million TEU. For comparison Singapore handles 39 million TEU. The Great Nicobar transhipment port will similarly revolutionize transhipment business in India.
