As India celebrates the success of Chandrayaan-3 lander's soft landing on Moon today. The people from Sithampoondi and Kunnamalai villages in the Namakkal district of Thamizh Nadu had special reasons to cheer.

Namakkal stones and mud are taken to study the landing effects as the moon surface has similar quality of sand. These villages have been supplying soil to the ISRO for its moon missions since 2012.
Reason: The properties of the soil in these two villages of Namakkal district of Thamizh Nadu are similar to that of the lunar surface soil present at the southern pole of the Moon.
The lunar surface has 'Anorthosite' (a type of intrusive igneous rock) type of soil. About 50 tonnes of soil were sent to ISRO so far. Earlier NASA agreed to supply this type of soil @ 150 USD per kg of this soil. Thus ~ INR 60-64 crores has been saved as the villagers gave it free of cost.
