Example of Taxes in Both Tax Regime

The old tax regime in India refers to the previous tax system that was in place prior to the introduction of the new tax regime in the 2020 Union Budget. Under the old tax regime, taxpayers had the option to claim exemptions and deductions on certain items such as investments, insurance, and home loans to reduce their taxable income. 

The old tax regime offered three tax slabs - 5%, 20% and 30% - for individuals based on their income levels. 

The tax rates for the old tax regime were: 

Up to Rs 2.5 lakh: NIL 

Rs 2.5 lakh to Rs 5 lakh: 5% 

Rs 5 lakh to Rs 7.5 lakh: 20% 

Rs 7.5 lakh to Rs 10 lakh: 20% 

Rs 10 lakh to Rs 12.5 lakh: 30% 

Rs 12.5 lakh to Rs 15 lakh: 30% 

Above Rs 15 lakh: 30%

The new tax regime is optional, so taxpayers can choose to continue with the old tax regime if it is more beneficial for them.

The new tax regime in India, also called the "Simplified Tax Regime," was introduced in the 2020 Union Budget. Under this new regime, taxpayers have the option to forgo certain exemptions and deductions in exchange for lower tax rates. 

 The new tax regime offers four tax slabs - 5%, 20%, 25%, and 30% - for individuals based on their income levels. 

The tax rates for the new tax regime are: 

Up to Rs 2.5 lakh: NIL 

Rs 2.5 lakh to Rs 5 lakh: 5% 

Rs 5 lakh to Rs 7.5 lakh: 10% 

Rs 7.5 lakh to Rs 10 lakh: 15% 

Rs 10 lakh to Rs 12.5 lakh: 20% 

Rs 12.5 lakh to Rs 15 lakh: 25% 

Above Rs 15 lakh: 30% 

The new tax regime also has a higher surcharge for those with an annual income of more than Rs 50 lakh. The surcharge is 7% for those earning between Rs 50 lakh and Rs 1 crore, and 12% for those earning above Rs 1 crore. It is important to note that the new tax regime is optional, and taxpayers can choose to continue with the old tax regime if it is more beneficial for them.
