According to The Times of India, the total
number of alcohol consumers in India is
estimated at 16 crores, of which 1.2 crore are
women (7.5%). Liquor consumption by
women has increased during the pandemic.

The states, which consume the highest
amount of alcohol (IMFL, beer, country liquor)
are Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Kerala,
Karnataka, Sikkim, Haryana and Himachal

Per capita consumption of alcohol remains
at 5.5 litre in India compared to global
average of 6.2 litres. Further improvement
in consumption is expected via a lowering of
excise duties (Delhi, West Bengal, and
Maharashtra) and improvement in liquor
distribution.
