On this day Bhu-Loka or Earth is at its weakest Prana Shakti levels. With Sun in its debility and moon in Amavasya with least degree of light, it's the day plus night of highest Tamas or darkness, mainly the Night.
That's why this day is most auspicious for starting difficult mantra sadhna, Tantra, prayers etc. Of course one day prior to it Nark Chaturdashi is much stronger for Tantra action, war, battles etc.
So that's why we light diyaa or earthen lamps with oil, ghee etc or spread brightness in general. We celebrate, eat and distribute sweets as it gives instant energy and symbolic of energy. Food and merry making is symbolic.of storing more energy in people. The meaning can be construed further om similar lines.
Goddess Lakshmi is the dhana(food and energy) devi as Dhana lakshmi. Pl note that Dhana as money or any assets in this material world is just a form enabling procurement of food and energy. So real Dhana is food and real wealth is good health.
I am also enclosing a prayer for Ma Mahalakshmi , called Shree Suktam. Pl ensure that you read it alongwith your family members on Deepawali. You must pass the same to your children and relatives to ensure that our scientific culture is well retained and our future generations know why we celebrate festivals and what's the meaning behind it.
