We can be proud of this fact that India cuts approximately 92 percent of the diamonds mined worldwide, and accounts for nearly 65 percent by value. However we feel sad also as these are labour intensive works and we as a nation are doing this task because of labour being cheap who are working in poor conditions.
Surat as a Diamond Hub
No doubt Surat has emerged as largest processing diamonds station and they are getting these diamonds from Australia’s Argyle mine. Surat dominates globally as a processing centre, and polishes close to 90 percent by volume, and about 57 percent by value. It owes its success to its ability to process a wide range of sizes and qualities.
Surat is bringing the laurels to the nation and they must work hard to improve the living condition of the labourers and pay them adequately to get the best talent. We sincerely hope that we have world class diamond cutting courses at Surat and people come from worldwide to undertake the training here and for that govt has to put its bit to get the things going and put the industry in order by proper regulations.
