Southern Petrochemical Industries Corporation (SOUTHPET), founded in 1975, is engaged in providing products and services through its divisions of fertilizer, pharmaceuticals, engineering and construction services, and agri-business. Urea and phosphatic fertilizers are produced by the fertilizer division. The four strategic sub-divisions of Penicillin-G, active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), formulations and industrial enzymes form part of the pharmaceutical division. APIs such as morantal tartrate, pentosan polysulfate, topiramate, venlaflaxine and irbesartan have been developed through in-house R&D and commercialized. Contract research and manufacturing services are also undertaken. Formulations include anti-histaminic products (syrups), anti-TB products, and aerosol sprays, which have also been exported to African and Asian markets. The agri business division engages in tissue culture, the thrust being on banana, gerbera and anthurium plants. The seeds business developed in FY08 new hybrids in tomato and okra and launched them for commercial marketing. Bio-products for sale include Neemgold, a neem-based bio-pesticide; Bio-gold, a bio-fertilizer; Cytozyme, a plant growth promoter; and Wanis, a plant extract having fungi-static properties. The engineering and construction services division has expertise in implementing complex large-scale projects. In FY08, five major transmission line projects and one rural electrification project were successfully completed and commissioned. Recent transmission line projects have been undertaken for Power Grid Corporation of India (PGCIL) in the regions of Chattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, and five projects in rural electrification works under the Government of India`s (GOI`s) Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Vidyutikaran Yojana (RGGVY)/Accelerated Power Development and Reform Program (APDRP) in Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. In FY09, the company bagged contracts for a value of Rs 2566.8 million from PGCIL including major contracts like rural electrification works at Sultanpur in Uttar Pradesh and Jhaiawar in Rajasthan under GOI RGGVY for Rs 904 million; supply and construction of Korba-Birslnghpur 400 kV DC transmission lines in Chattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh for Rs 916.3 million; and supply and construction of Damoh-Bhopal 400 kV DC transmission lines in Madhya Pradesh for Rs 746.5 million. Manufacturing units are located across Tamil Nadu with installed capacities of 2,000 MMU penicillin G, 620,400 MTPA urea, 10,000 MTPA aluminum fluoride, 278,800 MTPA composite fertilizers, 150,000 MTPA sulfuric acid, 52,800 MTPA phosphoric acid, and 352,000 MTPA ammonia. Fertilizer Association of India honored the company with an award for best environmental protection in 2006-2007. The International Safety Award for the year 2006 was also bagged from the British Safety Council - UK for the 28th consecutive year. Strategic investments have been made in subsidiaries and joint ventures including Indo-Jordan Chemicals Company, Jordan; SPIC Fertilizers and Chemicals FZE, Dubai; SPIC Petrochemicals, Ind-Stal Chemicals, Orchard Microsystems, Tamilnadu Petro-products, Technip India, EDAC Engineering, Tuticorin Alkali Chemicals and Fertilisers, Manali Petrochemical, and SPEL Semiconductor in India.
