Mahanagar Telephone Nigam (MTNL) was established in 1986 by the Government of India. It offers basic telephony services, mobile services and internet services. The company carries out its operations through two wholly-owned subsidiaries, viz. Millennium Telecom (MTL) at Mumbai and Mahanagar Telephone Mauritius (MTML) at Mauritius. MTNL has also entered into a JV jointly with TCIL, VSNL and NVPL in order to provide WLL based basic telecom services in Nepal. The company has a 58,000 workforce, 492 state-of-the-art digital exchanges and 1,375.05 Km of optical fiber as part of its infrastructure being provided in Delhi and Mumbai. Currently, the total subscriber base of the telecom player is around 5.5 million including mobile and landline services. MTNL plans to widen its cellular and CDMA-based WLL customer base, introduce 3G services, achieve at least 500,000 broadband customers, and roll out of telecom services in Mauritius through its subsidiary. For providing improved connectivity, coverage and congestion free network to its GSM customers, MTNL has plans to add 450 more base transceiver stations (BTS) to the existing 270 BTS in Delhi and Mumbai.
