Mangalore Refinery & Petrochemicals (MRPL), incorporated on Mar. 07, 1988, is a state-of-the-art grassroot refinery at Mangalore in Karnataka. It became a subsidiary of Oil and Natural Gas Corporation in March 2003. The ISO 9001:2000 and ISO 14001-2004 certified company produces petroleum gas for automobiles, naphtha, motor gasoline, aromatic feedstock, reformate, aviation turbine fuel, automotive diesel fuel, vacuum gas oil, furnace oil, low sulfur heavy stock, bitumen and sulfur. Mixed Xylene is a new value-added product introduced in 2007-2008. It has a design capacity to process 9.69 million tons per annum and is the only refinery in India to have two hydrocrackers producing premium diesel (high cetane) and two continuous catalytic regeneration units producing unleaded petrol of high octane. A liquid petroleum gas (LPG) Merox unit reduces the sulfur content in LPG and the kerosene Merox unit converts mercaptans to disulphide. Shell Soaker Visbreaker technology under Licence from ABB Lummus, Holland, has been adopted to upgrade heavy vacuum residue to gas, naphtha and gas oil. Other facilities include an oil jetty to receive crude oil and dispatch petroleum products by ocean tankers, a 43-Km raw water line from river Netravathi, a well equipped laboratory, and 75 storage tanks. The company has set up a 118.5 MW capacity captive power plant. The Government of India Recent has conferred Mini Ratna (Category-I) status upon the company. It also won first prize in the prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru Centenary Award for energy conservation in refineries for the year 2006-2007. A joint venture agreement has been signed on Feb. 05, 2008 along with Shell Aviation to market and supply aviation fuel. Initially, this will be done at Bangalore and Hyderabad and at a later stage other Indian airports will be supplied the fuel. Earlier in July 2007, the company entered into a contract with State Trading Corporation (STC), Mauritius to supply all petroleum requirements of Mauritius for an extended period of three years. Its first HiQ retail outlet at Maddur in Karnataka opened on Jan. 12, 2008 marking the company`s entry into the retail segment. In order to enhance non-fuel income and to attract more customers to the retail outlet, it has tied up with Baskin Robbins Ice-cream Parlor, Cafe Coffee day, and other outlets. A Memorandum of Understanding has been signed with Corporation Bank to provide ATMs at its retail outlets coming up across Karnataka and other southern states. It is now one of the eight companies in the western zone having a premier trading house status granted by Director General of Foreign Trade, Government of India.
