TIL commenced operations in 1944 as ` Tractors India`, a dealer of Caterpillar Tractor Company, USA, for its earth moving equipment. In 1950, it expanded its range of dealerships to included cranes supplied by Coles Cranes of UK and in 1960 set up a JV company for manufacturing mobile cranes, which was later merged with TIL. In 1984, TIL acquired Spundish Engineers Limited (SEL), a loss making chemical process equipment manufacturing unit in Vashi, Mumbai and in 1986 diversified into dealership of earth moving range of Hindustan Motors & Caterpillar and diesel engine driven electrical generators of Hindustan Powerplus Ltd. Following a take-over of Coles Cranes, UK by Grove Europe Ltd (GEL) in FY93, TIL tied up with GEL, which is a part of Grove Worldwide, a leading manufacturer of cranes in the world. TIL is currently focusing on operations through three strategic business units - Material Handling Group (MHG), Construction Equipment Group and Power System Group. The MHG is a market leader in the diesel, electric and the hydraulic crane segments.It has also promoted a wholly owned subsidiary - Myanmar Tractors & Trading Co. which is engaged in trading operations in Myanmar.
