Dow Chemicals is a company associated with Bhopal gas tragedy and it has been considered as a sponsor for Olympics at London 2012. India has strongly objected to it being a sponsor of the platform which promotes harmony and healthy competition.
The Sports Ministry is mounting pressure on the Indian Olympic Association to seek the ouster of Dow Chemicals as sponsors of the London Olympics 2012. The ministry has written to the Indian Olympic Association, asking it to take up the matter with the International Olympic Committee.
Sports Ministry Government of India In a letter to the Indian Olympic Association stated that the matter of Dow's liability, in respect of the Bhopal Gas tragedy victims is subjudice and that the Government of India has itself filed a suit against the company. Strong public sentiment exists in this matter (On Dow as sponsor of the Olympics) and a number of eminent ex-Olympians have also raised concerns. We would advise the Indian Olympic Association to raise this matter immediately with the IOC while keeping the government informed"
Dow had recently filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court rejecting demands for a greater compensation for the victims of Bhopal Gas Tragedy.
We need to handle this situation in a pragmatic manner and boycotting the Olympics is not a solution and our concerns should be expressed to International Olympic association in no unequivocal terms as our heart beats with Bhopal Gas tragedy victims.
