Ingersoll Rand India (INGERSOL) was incorporated as a subsidiary of Ingersoll Rand Co., US in 1921. The parent holds about 74% of the equity in the Indian company. INGERSOL is the market leader in compressors and construction/mining equipment with a domestic market share of around 35%. Its customer base includes ONGC, IPCL and several other infrastructure development clients. INGERSOL has four plants in the country including plants located in Bangalore and Ahmedabad, which provide a range of air compressors. It dominates the higher range of reciprocating compressors of over 20 hp used in process plants and refineries.
INGERSOL makes small compressors mainly for the export market. The parent has phased out a number of small models and sources some of these from the Indian subsidiary. The local market for small compressors is price sensitive and dominated by unorganized players. In the domestic market, INGERSOL`s presence is mainly in the medium and large compressors (above 5 hp). INGERSOL also makes vacuum pumps, blast-hole drills, rock and water-well drilling equipment. It is the leader in the Rs 700 million blast-hole rig (coal mining) market. INGERSOL`s Ahmedabad facility makes reciprocating gas compressors and chemical process pumps, while construction & mining equipment is made at its Bangalore facility. Besides manufacturing, the company also acts as an agent of its parent and earns commission for products marketed by the parent company in India.
