Incorporated in 1986, Gujarat NRE Coke Limited (GNCL) is engaged in manufacturing low ash metallurgical coke for the steel industry, soda ash plants, zinc smelters and foundries. The primary activity of the company is manufacturing low ash metallurgical coke (LAMC). It is the largest non-captive manufacturer of low ash metallurgical coke in India. The company meets its requirements of low-ash content coking coal (yield is around 78-80%) through imports from Australia and NewZealand. GNCL has three manufacturing facilities in India with an installed capacity of 1.4 million tonnes of LAMC per annum. The industrial users of LAMC include integrated steel plants, industries/foundries producing ferro alloys, pig iron, engineering goods, soda ash, zinc units, etc. It has also set up a wind farm with 25-mw capacity in Kutch to supply green power to the plant. Further, GNCL has gone for backward integration and acquired two coking coalmines in Australia having coking coal reserves of 400 million tonnes. GNCL is the only manufacturer of metallurgical coal in India that exports its products to other countries. It currently exports almost 20% of its production. The major clientele include Hindustan Zinc , Nirma, Kalyani Steels, Jindal Vijaynagar Steel, GHCL, Lanco Steel, Birla Copper and Saurastra Chemicals. GNCL plans to increase its exports to 30-35% of its production. GNCL plans to set up an integrated steel making, rolling mill and co-generation of power plant in Kutch district. The project cost is estimated at Rs 1 billion.
