Gujarat Narmada Valley Fertilisers Company (GNFC) incorporated in 1976 is a joint-sector company jointly promoted by the Govt. of Gujarat and Gujarat State Fertilisers Company. The company has its presence in fertilizer business, industrial chemical business and information technology. GNFC has the world`s largest single-stream, fuel-oil-based ammonia and urea. The company manufactures and distributes fertilizers like urea, ammonium nitro-phosphate (ANP) and calcium ammonium nitrate (CAN) and chemicals like ammonia, weak nitric acid, concentrated nitric acid, methanol, acetic acid, formic acid, liquid nitrogen etc. The company set up a joint venture with Chematur, Sweden and IBI Chematur, to form Narmada Chematur Petrochemicals to produce 20,000 tpa of toluene di-isocyanate with DuPont technology.
Recently, the company started trading in fertilizers like urea, muriate of potash (MOP), single super phosphate (SSP) and chemicals like methanol. The fertilizer and chemical divisions comprised 59% and 40% respectively of the turnover in 2004-05, including that of traded products. The company is revamping its urea plant at about Rs 0.15 billion to reduce energy consumption. The Methanol-ll Plant, also underway, will increase the methanol production by about 175 MT per day at an estimated investment of Rs. 0.95 billion. The company plans higher production of methanol and acetic acid by means of de-bottlenecking/ revamping in the near future and desires putting up new plants of larger capacities.
