BF Utilities (BFUTI) was established in 2001 when the financial services and windmill divisions were demerged by Bharat Forge into the company. It is a part of the Kalyani Group, one of the leading industrial houses in India, having diverse business interests in engineering steel, forgings, auto components, non-conventional energy and specialty chemicals. Some of the group companies include Kalyani Steels, Kenersys, Kalyani Infotech, and several joint ventures, besides Bharat Forge, which is the second largest forging company in the world. The company was set up to satiate the power requirement of the Kalyani Group companies as power is a critical element in the group`s activities. It has set up wind-assisted power plants at Thoseghar in the Satara district of Maharashtra. The windmills have been set up in phases since June 1998 and as of now 51 machines of 230 KW capacity each and 11 machines of 600 KW capacity each have been set up. This would generate around 40 million units annually. The total capacity of the power plants is 18.33 MW. Technology has been provided by Enercon India with support from its business partners, Enercon GmbH, Germany. Technologies like micrositing and gearless generator make up their competitive advantage. The group stands to benefit with the Certificate of Clean Energy Development Mechanism (CDM) issued to the company under the Kyoto Protocol. Bhalchandra Investment, Mundhwa Investment, Forge Investment, Jalakamal Investment & Finance, and Jalakumbhi Investment & Finance are subsidiaries and Kalyani Utilities Development and Nandi Infrastructure Corridor Enterprises are indirect subsidiaries of the company.
