Jaiprakash Hydro-Power (JHPL) is a subsidiary company of Jaiprakash Associates previously known as the Jaypee Group. It was a result of the memorandum of understanding in 1991 between the holding company and the government of the Himachal Pradesh to implement a power plant in HP. This plant was to be established, operated and maintained by the company for an initial period of 40 years extendable for further 20 years. Subsequently, the company was incorporated in December, 1994. However, the commercial generation of power had begun in 2003 at a project cost of Rs 16,248 million. The company came out with an IPO on March 22, 2005. The company?s principal activity is to own and operate hydro-electric power plant. The company operates private sector run-of-the-river hydro-electric power plant on build own and operate basis. The plant with a capacity of 300 MW (Baspa-II) is located at Kinnaur district in Himachal Pradesh. The company faced a low power generation in the last quarter of FY 06 due to heavy rains and snow fall in and around the area where the company?s Baspa-II hydro-electric project is situated. This caused suspension of power generation from January 19, 2006.
