CESC, the flagship company of the diversified and integrated RPG group, is a private power utility company engaged in the generation and distribution of electricity in the city of Kolkata and its adjoining areas. It was incorporated on Mar. 28, 1978. The company generates and distributes electricity within the licensed area of 567 Sq. Km. in Kolkata and around it. It provides electricity to nearly two million customers and has a generating capacity of about 1,000 MW. The three pulverized fuel stations are located in Budge Budge, Titagarh, Southern and the fourth power generating station in New Cossipore with power generation capacities of 500 MW, 240 MW, 135 MW, and 100 MW respectively. Coal for power generation is procured from public sector organizations like ECL and BCCL, apart from its captive coal mine in Sarishatoli. In view of the projected growth in demand, a third 250 MW unit is being set up at the existing Budge Budge generating station site, which is expected to come on stream in 2009. In FY`07, the combined plant load factor of the three pulverized fuel stations at Budge Budge, Titagarh and Southern was over 94% and in a significant development, these three stations attained Zero Effluent environment friendly status. Budge Budge achieved a plant load factor of 99.77%, which ranks among the very best achieved by any thermal power station in India. In March 2007, the company received from the Prime Minister of India the National Award for meritorious performance in the power sector for the year 2005-2006. It has an exclusive power supply license from the West Bengal government till the year 2020. The registered office is located at CESC House, Chowringhee Square, Kolkata-700001.
