Birla Corporation (formerly Birla Jute Manufacturing Company) manufactures and markets cement, jute products, auto-ancillaries, PVC floor coverings, wallpaper, coated cotton fabrics, iron and steel castings. A part of M.P. Birla group, the company was established in 1919. The company has four divisions; namely cement, jute, vinoleum, and auto trim. The cement division with its seven plants manufactures ordinary 43 and 53 grade portland, fly ash-based portland pozzolana, sulphate-resistant cement etc. Brand names include Khajuraho, Chetak and Samrat. The company will invest more than Rs 12 billion to raise its cement production capacity to 10 million tons by 2010 from the current 5.3 million tons. It has already started expansion at its Satna and Chanderia plants to enhance the capacity by 1.7 million tons. Birla Corporation has pioneered the utilization of jute felt for automotive applications. The jute division manufactures products for almost every major application of jute. It is a leading exporter of jute products to Europe, USA, Japan and others. The plant has an installed capacity of 38,000 MT. The vinoleum division has an installed capacity of 4.86 million sq m. of cushion vinyl flooring and PVC sheets. It introduced rotogravure printing in 1996-1997 and now has the distinction of having facilities for online rotogravure and screen printing. The autotrim division produces autotrim products like door trims, pillars, package trays and felt/carpet/insulation. Today, the division supplies automotive interiors based on one-step technology using JUPPBOARD (Jute-PP felt) and polypropelene/polyethylene foam-backed covering, produced in-house. The company exports cement, jute products and PVC floorings. Subsidiaries include Assam Jute Supply Company, Talavadi Cements and Lok Cements.
