Bata India (BATA) is engaged in the business of manufacturing and marketing footwear and accessories. Incorporated on Dec. 23, 1931, it became a public limited company 1n 1973 and got its current name on April 23, 1973. Promoted by Leader A.G., St. Moritz, Switzerland, a member of the multinational Bata Shoe Organization (BSO), the company too is a part of BSO. The chairman of the company is P.M. Sinha and Marcelo Villagran, the managing director. The company manufactures leather, rubber, canvas, and PVC shoes. It offers a selection of men, ladies, children, schools, sports, canvas, and Hawaii footwear. It offers accessories like socks, polishes, belts, brushes, and school bags. Brand portfolio comprises Hush Puppies, Dr Scholls, North Star, Power, Marie Claire, and Bubblegummers. It has recently introduced its Wind collection. The production units of the company are situated in Batanagar (West Bengal), Faridabad (Haryana), Bataganj (Bihar), Mokamehghat (Bihar), Peenya (Karnataka), and Hosur (Tamil Nadu). It also has two tanneries for its leather supply in Mokamehghat (Bihar) and Batanagar (West Bengal). The company sells its products through retail outlets as well as through wholesalers and has approximately 1,100 stores in India. It is to open 200 new stores in two to three years. The company has investment in joint ventures for surplus property development. The Rs 13,000 million Batanagar envisages building of residential blocks, modern housing for the company's employees, a hospital and a school. Returns from this would accrue by 2008-2009.
