Tata Metaliks (TATAMETALI), promoted by Tata Steel is engaged in the business of manufacturing and selling pig iron. It was incorporated on Oct. 10, 1990 with Tata Korf as the technology consultant and KTS, Brazil as the technology supplier. The company offers low sulfur and low phosphorus grade pig iron used in specialized applications like pressure tight precision castings, crankshafts, gears, rolling mill rolls, automobile engine blocks, motor and generator housings, railway and machine tools. The manufacturing units are located in Kharagpur, West Bengal and Redi, Maharashtra.
The installed capacity of 325,000 TPA would increase to 650,000 TPA by 2007-2008 on completion of capacity expansion. The company has a captive 6.76 MW power plant, which uses the surplus blast furnace gas. As part of its diversification plans, the company is entering into manufacturing ductile iron (DI) pipes. It has entered into a joint venture (JV) agreement with two Japanese companies Kubota Corporation and Metal One for setting up manufacturing facilities of ductile iron pipes in India.
The 110,000 TPA plant in Kharagpur would be operational by early 2009. The company has also diversified into the castings business with focus on the automobile and construction sectors and has started deliveries to a group company. As part of backward integration, the company has applied for iron ore mines in Jharkhand and Orissa. For its coking coal needs, the company has approached the West Bengal government. The company markets it products throughout India and around 10% of company products are exported to South East Asia and Europe.
