National Aluminium Company , incorporated on Jan. 07, 1981 as a public sector enterprise of the Government of India, is Asia`s largest integrated aluminum complex. A Navratna status company, it encompasses bauxite mining, alumina refining, aluminum smelting and casting, power generation, rail and port operations. The product portfolio includes aluminum ingots, sows, billets, wire rods, alloy wire rods, cast strips, calcined alumina, alumina hydrate, Zeolite-A, specialty hydrate and alumina, and aluminum rolled products. A fully mechanized opencast mine is located in the Koraput district of Orissa with a capacity of 4.8 million MTPA serving feedstock to the alumina refinery at Damanjodi located on the foothills, which has an installed capacity of 1.575 million MTPA. A 345,000 MTPA capacity aluminum smelter is located at Angul in Orissa. Close to the aluminum smelter at Angul, a 960 MW captive power plant has been established for firm power supply to the smelter. The company has set up a 50,000 MTPA rolled products unit, integrated with the smelter plant, to produce aluminum cold-rolled sheets and coils from continuous caster route based on advanced technology from FATA Hunter, Italy. At Visakhapatnam port on the Bay of Bengal, it has established mechanized storage and ship-handling facilities for exporting alumina in bulk and importing caustic soda with a ship-loading rate of 2,200 tons per hour. Government of India has reserved bauxite deposits at Pottangi in Orissa for allotment to the company. The ISO 9001:2000 certified company was adjudged the Best Public Sector Enterprise for its corporate social responsibility activities at the Think Odisha Leadership Awards function, organized by The Times of India and Tefla`s in August 2008. It has also bagged the Engineering Export Promotion Council`s prestigious All India Export Award being adjudged as the Star Performer in large enterprise category for its outstanding export performance during the year 2006-2007. Continuing with its self-propelled growth, this zero-debt company is implementing the 2nd phase of its expansion program at an investment of more than Rs.50,000 million, which is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2008. The company had been allotted UTKAL-E coal block by the Government of India in the year 2006-2007, having a reserve of around 70 million MT, for its new units at the captive power plant. Major projects have been lined up in Andhra Pradesh in India, Indonesia, and Iran abroad. A memorandum of agreement has been signed with Bharat Earth Movers in April 2008 for production of aluminum rails and wagons, and subsequently, aluminum rail coaches and metro coaches.
