Madras Cements (MADRASCEM), a flagship company of the Ramco group, is principally engaged in the manufacture of cement. The company was incorporated in 1961. The company manufactures cement, ready mix concrete, dry mortar, cement-based putty, and tile fix compound. The company has an installed capacity of 6 million tons per annum of cement spread across four manufacturing facilities in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. It also has two ready mix concrete (RMC) plants near Chennai. The production capacity will increase to 8 million tons per year on account of an additional clinker unit at its Andhra Pradesh plant with an installed capacity of 4,000 tons per day. A new plant is coming up in Tamil Nadu with a capacity of 2 million tons per year. Madras Cements has an installed capacity of 65 MW of wind power in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, and has 72 MW coal-fired captive power plants at one of its plants in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. In 2007, the company will install about 60 MW of wind power at an investment of Rs 3,300 million taking its total installed capacity to 125 MW. The company is the most technically advanced in India. The company`s research and development center is situated near Turaipakkam, Chennai. It was the first company in south India to convert all its capacity to the dry process. Awards include the 4 Leaves Award from the Centre for Science and Environment and National Award for Energy Conservation from the Confederation of Indian Industries.
