Carborundum Universal (CARBORUNIV), a part of the US $2 billion conglomerate Murugappa group, is engaged in the manufacture of abrasives, refractory products and electro-minerals. Founded in 1954, the chairman of the company is M.M. Murugappan and K. Srinivasan, the managing director. The company operates in the businesses of ceramics, abrasives and electrominerals. It provides bonded abrasives, coated abrasives and metal working fluids in more than 20,000 varieties used for material removal, polishing and finishing. The ceramics division manufactures wear-resistant and heat-resistant industrial and capital consumables categorized as industrial ceramics and super refractories. The electro minerals division offers brown fused alumina, white fused alumina, silicon carbide high quality micro grits, fused and sintered products for various applications. The company is vertically integrated from mining and calcination of bauxite to manufacture of electro minerals, abrasives and refractories with operations in India, Australia, Canada, China, Middle East, Europe and US. It manufactures all its products and electro-minerals in ten facilities across the country. The company has a joint venture agreement with China Engineering and Exploration Bureau to acquire a 49% stake in Jingri Industrial Diamond Company, China; acquired 84% stake in OAO Volzhsky Abrasive Works, Russia through its subsidiary CUMI International, Cyprus for a consideration of around USD 37 million; and entered into a business purchase agreement with IVP for acquisition of its industrial ceramics division. It is one of the five manufacturers in the world with fully integrated operations that include mining, fusioning, wind and hydro power stations, manufacturing, marketing and distribution. Its captive wind and hydel power plants generate low cost electricity for its facilities. The company is ISO certified.
